Frequently Asked Questions

Can I order any day of the week?

Yes! Orders are accepted on the website any day of the week. However, we do require at least three days' advance notice to place an order. This is because all items are made to order and we do not keep a selection of pre-baked items. We need time to buy ingredients, bake the items, and decorate as needed

Can I place a custom order?

Yes (with limitations)! Any of my cake flavors can be turned into cupcakes as desired. Similarly, any of my cupcakes can be turned into cakes. You can mix & match cake flavors and frosting flavors (for example, say you wanted the Nancy Pelosi dark chocolate cake with the Jimmy Panetta raspberry frosting, we could do that!). I am also always happy to do a custom design for you if you have something in mind. Just email me at info@capitolcakery.com to discuss your custom order and get your custom price.

What I unfortunately don't offer are custom flavors, since every recipe needs to be approved by the county before I can legally sell it. I also do not recreate other bakers' designs. I am happy to use photos as inspiration, but I don't make exact replicas of other cakes.

Where are you located?

I’m located in Davis, California, but I don’t give out my exact address until you order in order to protect my privacy. I also protect my address because Capitol Cakery is a HOME Bakery, so I don’t have a walk-in storefront.

Do you deliver?

Yes, but only within a 20-mile radius of the zip code 95618. If you are outside this range, you are welcome to select the pickup option when ordering, and I will provide my address to you. You may also arrange for someone else to pick up, or we can meet at a point within a 20-mile radius of 95618.

Do you ship your items?

Not yet, but shipping within the State of California will soon be available. Because Capitol Cakery is a HOME Bakery, under California law I am prohibited from shipping items out of state. If you are interested in having items shipped to you, please contact me at info@capitolcakery.com to be notified when shipping options become available.

Do you offer vegan, sugar free, and/or gluten free items?

Yes! Several of my items can be made vegan or dairy free. The dairy free items contain honey, and therefore are not truly vegan. However, all dairy substitutions are made to accommodate those who wish it to be dairy free. In the cases of vegan options, there are no animal products in the item. To select this option, simply choose the "make it vegan" option when selecting your items. Please be sure to read my disclaimers page, as some vegan items may contain nut-based products. I do not offer sugar free or gluten free items at this time.

Do you do wedding cakes?

YES! I do book a limited number of weddings per month. If you are interested in having Capitol Cakery as your wedding cake vendor, please contact me for our wedding information and to see if I have your date available. Because I only book a limited number of weddings, my wedding availability does fill quickly. You are encouraged to reach out at least three months in advance to see if I have your date available. Please keep in mind that if you would like a topper or fresh flowers on your cake, you will need to provide those to me and I will be happy to place them.

Cake tastings are $45 each and include up to three flavors of cake, filling, and frosting, as well as up to an hour of consultation for your design. I will assemble two cupcakes in each flavor combination that you select for you and your fiancé to try.

Please also keep in mind that under California law, I am not permitted to sell anything that has not been approved by my county health inspector. Therefore if you want something that is currently not on my menu for your wedding, I will not be allowed to create that for you. If you need referrals for good wedding cake options, feel free to email me at info@capitolcakery.com and I'll be happy to send you some recommendations!

Do you bake tiered cakes?

I can make any of the cake options into a tiered cake. Please contact me at info@capitolcakery.com for a custom price based on how many tiers and which cake. Please keep in mind that the only tiered cakes I will sell are those already on my menu. I will not create tiered cakes if they are not already listed on the website.

What substitutions are in your vegan cakes?

When substituting for dairy milk, I use either almond milk, coconut milk, or an almond/coconut blend, depending on what is available. To substitute for dairy butter in cakes, I use Earth Balance soy butter. To substitute for dairy butter in frostings, I use vegetable shortening. To substitute for dairy eggs, I use egg replacer, flax powder, or JUST plant-based eggs. I regularly bake for people who are vegan and have never had an allergic reaction in all the years I have been baking. That being said, when you purchase from me, you agree to my disclaimer. Please visit my disclaimers page, as some vegan items may contain nut-based products.

Do you offer any discounts?

YES! As a thank you for the their service to our nation, active duty military and veterans receive 15% off all orders with valid military / veteran ID. Additionally, if you vote on Election Day, you will receive 10% off your order with proof of voting as a way to say thank you for being an engaged citizen! From time to time, I may also offer other discounts. Keep an eye on social media pages for discount notifications.

How do you decide who to name your bakes after?

When coming up with names for my bakes, I look first at the ingredients in the bake and try to find an elected official who represents the main ingredient. For example, North Dakota produces the most honey in the United States, so my honey cake is named after a Senator from North Dakota, Kevin Cramer. Other items might be based on a Member's heritage. For example, my Thai tea cake is named after Tammy Duckworth, who is of Thai descent, and my brown sugar pie, which is popular in Canada, is named after Sean Patrick Maloney, who was born in Canada.
